The Holy Spirit (Who What Where When Why & How) A Short Bible Study

Who?

The Holy spirit, Holy ghost, comforter, counselor, teacher, guide, spirit of God. The Holy spirit is not a force that we can harness, the Holy spirit is a being, as a person (able to feel emotion), referred to as He, and is part of the triune God; Father, Son, and Holy spirit.

John 14:26 but the comforter, which is the Holy ghost, which the father will send in my name, HE shall teach you all things, and bring all things to remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Ephesians 4:30 and GRIEVE not the Holy spirit of God, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption.

The Holy Spirit Is Part of the Trinity:

Genesis 1:1 ... In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Matthew 3:16-17 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Note the parallel between what Jesus speaks, and what the Holy spirit speaks:

John 16:23 (Referring to the Holy Spirit) ... for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak;

John 12:49 (Referring to Jesus) For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

What?

The Holy spirit comforts, teaches, guides, testifies of the truth, reproves, convicts, communicates, glorifies God, empowers, transforms, inspires, seals, sanctifies, calls, fills, reveals, resurrects, prophecies, prays, instructs, produces fruit, seeks the greater good, and abides in those who belong to Christ.

John 15:26 But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Acts 2:41-47 (After witnessing and listening to Peter preach under the anointing of the Holy spirit) Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.

John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgement...

1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

John 15:1 If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever...

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Romans 8:26 And in like manner the spirit helpeth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Where?

The Holy spirit lives within true followers of Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Matthew 10:20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of our Father speaking through you.

When?

Now!

Luke 1:41 And it came to pass that, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost...

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Acts 8:35-38 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, see here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, if thou believe with all thine heart, though may. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Why?

We cannot live the christian life without being filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy spirit provides the power, peace, provision, passion, purity, holiness, wholeness, wisdom, discipline, desire, discernment, direction, counsel, comfort, correction, conviction, courage necessary to follow Jesus Christ. If we do not have the Holy Spirit living within us, we do not belong to Christ. By the Holy Spirit we mortify our flesh, obliterate our sinful desires, as He (The Holy Spirit) produces Godly character within us through the fruit of the spirit.

Matthew 27:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 20:21-22 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, receive the Holy Ghost...

Romans 8:8-10 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Romans 8:12-14 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness, kindness, and self control: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

How?

Repent (Turn away from sin) be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and you will receive the Holy spirit.

Acts 2:37-38 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the GIFT of the Holy Ghost.

Luke 11:9-13 And I say unto you, ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye the, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
